The Time Has Come

After an often tumultuous time for our family in Denver, we made the difficult decision about a month ago to move back New York City. And while we did enjoy some great experiences and friends in Colorado, we feel called to move our family back East. I can now say we will look fondly back on our time in Denver, although there were many dark days for our family there that we endured. We also learned a lot about our family, about our reliance on the Lord, about serving others, about trust, and about letting go. And who knows we may return one day far in the future, but for now we regard it as a season of sanctification through trials.

We are not through this storm, yet, however. Our departure from Denver was fraught with peril as we packed and loaded amid pretty fierce weather conditions. Frigid temperatures and unrelenting snowfall kept Andy up all night (literally) loading up the truck. The boys and I slept downstairs with our neighbor and when I emerged at 7:20am I found Andy was still loading and never went to bed. Oy. Our original plan was to leave at 4am that morning; it was then after 7am and we ere still hours from being ready to leave.

The weather persisted. Andy took a two hour nap while I re-evaluated our plan and reached out to friends for help. After a brief re-charge, Andy and some incredibly gracious friends finished loading. We were all feeling fatigues and our cross country journey had not even begun.

By 2pm, we were finally ready. We left a bitterly, cold, snowy Denver and headed East. I was sad to be leaving our home of the last 18 months under such undesirable conditions, but I guess in retrospect this made it easier to leave, versus leaving the characteristically sunny skies of Colorado. I also reflected on our last few weeks in Denver and how much quality time we got in with friends, as well as good family time visiting our favorite places one last time.

Here is the short version of the rest of our move to NYC:

-We took 9 hours to drive a 6 hour drive to the middle of Kansas, where some generous and caring friends had booked us a hotel room. It was a long day, but the roads were clear and it was evident that had we left in the morning as originally planned the roads would have still been icy.  God's provision, thank you.

- The next day we made it to St. Louis where friends were waiting with hot soup and welcoming arms for our weary souls. This was a brief but really enjoyable rest for the night.

- Day 3 = 16 hour drive from St. Louis to Harrisburg, PA with 2 times getting lost and really cranky kiddos (who wouldn't be?!). Misery. Enough said. (but again thankful that we were "behind" because we missed terrible icy conditions through the midwest, passing numerous cars in ditches)

- We arrived at my sister's house late Monday night, completely worn out. I believe it was close to midnight, but I can't really remember. So thankful for my sis and bro-in-law.

- We spent two days recovering from the drive in PA, but our final move into the city was not any easier than the start of our trip: the blazer died, the moving truck got stuck in the middle of the road and had to be dug out, Andy had to make a solo trip to NY to drop our stuff in storage and return, all of which led to the need of my bro-in-law driving with us back to NYC to drop our dead car in a wal-mart parking lot,  help finish unloading into storage, and return the moving truck and dolly.

Finally, late Wednesday night, we arrived at our temporary place in NYC. Exhale. For Now.

The Goodwins are finished "rocking" Colorado, so please join us back on our New York City blog! (www.goodwinsrock.blogspot.com).

A Day in the Mountains!

Colorado has had some beautiful (mild) weather this January and we decided to take advantage of the holiday weekend and spend the day in the mountains. By now we have figured out some of our favorite places, and we don't know how much longer we will have access to all of this natural beauty, so we mapped out a figure eight driving route to take us on one last tour of the rockies!

First we went to Mount Falcon, which is where we went on our first hike when we moved to Denver (it is also where Laney is buried, so we went to say a final goodbye). Mount Falcon has a pretty good assortment of family friendly trails, so it's an enjoyable hike for everyone.

Clowning around (notice I am without assistive devices but still sporting the orthopedic boot)

Judah kept calling this fencing the "stumpgoose" and we couldn't figure out why, until we remembered a book he loves with Duck and Goose where Duck asks Goose "is our pumpkin on top of the stump, Goose?". Judah thought the word for a tree stump was "stumpgoose". haha

So many deer!

Goodbye Laney

Next we drove up Loveland Pass, breathtaking views! On the way back down we circled around to visit St. Mary's Glacier, then stopped for lunch in Idaho Springs at Tommy Knockers Brew Pub.

Then we returned to Echo Lake, where we went camping this summer, except this time it was frozen solid. We had such a great time running around on top!

We left Echo Lake and drove a scenic highway through the mountains and through Evergreen, a really quaint, "classically Colorado" town. Evergreen lake was frozen solid too and had ice skaters, hockey players, and ice fishermen! We were too pooped to stop but enjoyed the view as we drove by.

We thoroughly enjoyed our farewell mountain tour, maybe one day we will make it back to visit!

This Christmas Season

Well, this Christmas season was not celebrated in a way we would have ever imagined. I spent the first couple of weeks in December in a wheel chair recovering from my foot surgery, which put a big damper on all of our Christmas season plans from baking and decorating to the tree lighting festival to getting our own tree. It's just not the same when you observe your family doing most of these things instead of doing it with them. We tried really hard to stay upbeat for the boys and had lots of fun Christmas things for them to do (we planned out the 25 days of Christmas for the first time where they picked a "gift" out of a box everyday that contained an activity, like crafts, baking, seeing Christmas lights, decorating their wagon for a spin through the neighborhood, etc). We got a discount on our tree at the tree lot which I am pretty sure was because I was trying to navigate my wheel chair through the dirt and gravel lot, but I think I would rather pay twice for a tree and not have this injury.

We also celebrated Christmas with the boys early because we had plans to fly out on Christmas day to go see Andy's father. Unfortunately, on the night of December 23rd we received the news that he had passed away. We were devastated that the boys (and Andy) would not get to see him again. We made the trip anyway, of course, but spent the week in SC with friends and family and attended the funeral services. Obviously, this was not how we envisioned spending our Christmas. The trip did afford us the opportunity to see more people, including my grandfather who had just gotten out of the hospital. I had upgraded to crutches by this time, but it is still not fun to travel and navigate airports, planes and rental cars being disabled. We tried our best to enjoy the time with friends, but of course it was overshadowed by Andy's father's death. We were really sorry that it worked out this way.

Before I post our Christmas season pics, I should take a moment to apologize for how poorly written this post is. I mean, how exactly do you write about  a death in the family and a debilitating injury in the context of Christmas? We also decided in all of this that if our landlord doesn't let us stay month to month when our lease is up in February, we are just going to go ahead and head back East and figure things out as we go. More on that later.
